lyrics

I saw a red bird in a green city park
It conjured the last Christmas she was alive
Holding her greatgrandaughter her eyes had a spark
Of contentment or as much as she’d let by

And as that shadow disappeared I struggled to hold on
To the pieces of a life’s parade
Things I never thought I’d need until after they were gone
But now I wish I hadn’t let them fade

Everybody’s facing forward
It’s how we all get by
But me I’m trying to be thankful
For my goodbyes

In a picture I’ve got on a funny hat
There’s a strong resemblance in the nose
He’s been gone for years I guess I take for granted that
I got to tell him to let go

On Thursdays in the morning I think about his room
My voice sticks in the middle of my chest
Sitting in the silence hung between us like perfume
Waiting for his heart to finally rest

Everybody’s facing forward
It’s how we all get by
But me I’m trying to be thankful
For my goodbyes

Everybody’s working harder
It’s what we’re supposed to do
But me I’m trying to be simple and say
I love you
I loved you
